What can you plan for free in Mooiev?
Mooiev is browser-based film pre-production software for independent filmmakers, film students and small crews. You can write a screenplay, plan shots and storyboards with your own references, organize shoot days, prepare call sheets, track crew and budgets, and export production PDFs in the same project. AI image generation is optional; planning your film does not require generating images.
The Free plan costs $0 and includes 2 active projects, 50 MB of storage and 3 AI image credits per month. Standard storyboard images use 1 credit; high-quality images use 4 and a two-pass render adds 1. Client sharing is not included in Free. Starter costs $9.49 per month, with unlimited active projects, 1 GB of storage, client sharing and 10 monthly image credits; other AI generation and analysis tools are not included in Starter. Prices are in USD; applicable taxes may be added.
For a short film, start with one scene: write or import the screenplay, review its breakdown, add shots and your references, arrange the shooting day, then prepare and export the call sheet. Check storage and AI allowances before committing the whole production. You can inspect the fictional AFTER THE TIDE example and try standalone planning tools without an account.

Choose around the production you actually have
The best pre-production software for a short film is the one your crew can use to turn the script into a realistic shooting plan. A dialogue scene in one room and a coastal film with changing light create different demands. Before comparing subscriptions, list the decisions you must share: what happens, how it will be covered, when the cast can work and what everyone needs before arriving.
This guide is published by Mooiev. We demonstrate Mooiev with our fictional sample production AFTER THE TIDE. Descriptions of other products use their official feature pages, reviewed on 15 October 2026; they are not hands-on benchmark results. The order is not a scored ranking. Features, access and plan limits should be confirmed with each provider.
Four options and the workflow to investigate first
| Product | Workflow to inspect | Question before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Mooiev | A connected sample film, visual planning and crew portfolios | Can the same scene, shot and collaborator stay identifiable through your project? |
| StudioBinder | Shot tagging, shot specifications and camera setups | Which planning and sharing features are included in the plan you need? |
| Celtx | Script breakdown, catalogs and stripboard scheduling | How does your script become the assets and days you will manage? |
| Yamdu | Shared production data and cross-department workflows | How much setup and onboarding will your crew need? |
Mooiev for a short film that moves from writing to crewing
Mooiev combines screenplay writing, storyboards, shot lists, shoot days, crew and a budget inside a project. Its network and portfolios add context when you are looking for a collaborator. AFTER THE TIDE shows the connection using a five-page screenplay, six scenes, 35 shots and three shoot days. This is an original demonstration, not a client success story or a claim that every film can be completed on that schedule.
Start with one scene. Read its dramatic beats, choose a wide shot and the closer coverage that earns its place, then inspect the same shots in the schedule. Review the crew’s responsibilities and export a call sheet. A limitation to check is whether your particular screenplay import and external handoff requirements are supported; a tool that looks complete in a demo still needs to fit your team’s files and habits.
StudioBinder for shot-level planning
StudioBinder documents script-linked shot tagging, configurable shot specifications, grouping by camera setup and time estimates. It also describes view-only links and collaborator feedback. Inspect these features if a detailed coverage plan is central to your short. Confirm the current plan and sharing limits rather than assuming every advertised feature is included in free access.
Celtx for script-led breakdown and scheduling
Celtx describes a breakdown mode feeding a catalog, cast and crew, budget, schedule and reports. Its shot list supports camera descriptions and its schedule uses stripboards. Inspect the relationship between tagged script assets and the schedule if your production depends on maintaining those details. Confirm access, exports and collaboration for the package you are considering.
Run the same one-scene acceptance check
Use your own scene rather than a vendor’s longest feature list. The following check produces materials you can discuss with your director, producer and first AD. Record what worked, what required re-entry and what the receiving crew member could actually open. Do not compare an unlocked paid account in one product with a restricted trial in another without saying so.
- Write or import one scene and inspect the formatting. Keep a list of corrections.
- Break down characters, location, props and wardrobe. Confirm a change reaches the right records.
- Create six shots with size, movement, lens notes and a reason for each setup.
- Place the coverage in a shoot day and check cast availability, access and light.
- Export the documents your crew needs. Open the actual files on a phone and on a laptop.
- Invite or share with one colleague using the intended permission level. Check the handoff without your own owner account.
A small production does not need every module on day one
Choose the smallest workflow that gets your team to a shared, shootable plan. If you only need a list for tomorrow, try the standalone shot list maker first. If you need scene references, people and documents to remain connected over several days, evaluate the project workspace. Ask about costs using the actual number of projects, collaborators, storage and generation usage you expect; a headline starting price rarely answers the whole question.
